Painter and etcher Percival Gaskell was born in 1868 in Shipley, Yorkshire. He attended the Royal College of Art in Paris and also studied in Italy. He was the Principal of the Regent Street Polytechnic and a lecturer on art history at the University of London.
Gaskell was one of the foremost etchers in Britain of his time. He was a great influence on his contemporaries and subsequent generations of English printmakers. Gaskell was particularly skilled at producing mezzotints of landscapes and achieved stunning effects of shade and light, especially in his skies.
