Joseph Cornell

American , 1903 - 1972

Cornell was an untaught artist. His work predominantly consisted of box- like sculptures in which objects and fragments of the everyday are arranged, though he also produced several books and films. His work looks towards the Dada movement and in particular the artist Kurt Schwitters. Despite his absence of artistic training, Cornell was a knowledgable man, learning much about Surrealism and Max Ernst during the 1930's.
