Romare Bearden

American , 1912 - 2000

Romare Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris before moving to New York. He is best known for his paintings and prints that are drawn from the richness of the African- American tradition and experience. His works represent the places where he has lived and worked, including the rural South, Pittsburgh, New York City's Harlem and the Caribbean Island of St. Martin.

Bearden found inspiration both in content and style from a remarkable range of sources, from classical mythology to Chinese calligraphy.
