Donald Sultan was born in Ashville, North Carolina in 1951. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He moved to New York in 1975 and, shortly after, was given his first one-man show.
Sultan holds a place in the forefront of contemporary art, using his creative energy in a variety of media including paintings, prints and sculpture. He is known for his ability to successfully merge the finest of yesterday’s artistic tradition with a modern approach. Sultan received a Creative Artists Public Service Grant in 1978- 1979 and the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship in 1980-1981.
