Ethel Spowers

Australian , 1890 - 1947

Born in 1890 in Melbourne, Australia, Ethel Spowers was best known for her sporting and playground images. Printmaker, Claude Flight introduced her to the medium of color linocut, believing that the process was an affordable and democratic art medium.

Like many other female artists of her time, Spowers chose not to have children, although she celebrated their exuberance for life in her work. While she often depicted children at play in her work, she ignored major events such as the Depression and the Second World War.
