Virgil Solis was born in 1514. Little is known about his origins or his training. He and his workshop produced over 2000 prints and drawings and most are signed with his monogram. Some are dated. During the latter part of his career, the monogram simply noted that the work was made in his shop, though not necessarily by him personally. This may explain the notable fluctuations in quality from print to print.
Solis often signed himself as a painter, but nothing certain is known about this part of his artistic career. Virgil Solis died in Nuremberg in 1562.
