Penny Ashford

American , 1963 -

Penny Ashford finds inspiration in nature and, in particular, water and the movement, light and color of the sea. Literally immersed in her subject, Ashford employs an underwater camera which changes the traditional horizon line from a straight horizontal line to a fluid moving line. Extreme close-ups of bubbles and eddies turn into abstracted forms with biomorphic structure and composition.

Ashford graduated from Mount Holyoke College and studied at the International Center for Photography in New York.
