John Hill

American , 1770 - 1850

Born in London in 1770, John Hill was an important early 19th century printmaker. He produced topographical plates for a number of English books, including “Microcosm of London”. In 1826 he traveled to New York and settled in Philadelphia shortly afterwards. In Philadelphia he collaborated with Joshua Shaw whose paintings he etched and aquatinted for inclusion in the pioneering, “Picturesque American Scene”.
