Born in California, Mary Heilmann received her M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. A bicoastal artist with roots in California and New York, Heilmann works in a variety of abstract styles. Most of her compositions reference an underlying grid and display great sensitivity to the relationships of interrelated fields of color. Experimentation has always been crucial to Heilmann's creative process, first as a sculptor and now as a painter-printmaker. She currently lives and works in New York.
