Very fine, brilliant impression, printed on paper with watermark “Scales in a circle”(Briquet 2524), dated 1504-1508, before the text on the verso. From the series ‘The life of the Virgin’, 1511. In pristine condition, with thread margins and fine effects of ‘gauffrage’ on the verso.
In this quality and condition: rare.
Many details of these sheet seem to have been inspired by Schongauer’s design of this subject (vol. 8, p. 217): the broken stone wall, the angels in the upper left corner, the shepherd’s staff and the bagpipes protruding into the chamber, but however all is changed by the personal style and taste of the artist. The architecture is drawn on lines of strict perspective.
