About

Drypoint, a proof of an unrecorded early state, before the completion of the lines on the skirt, printed in dark brown ink, with plate tone, on old blue laid paper, with an indistinct watermark of a small crown or shield with pendant letters, annotated C in lower-left margin

Catalogue reference: Breeskin 138

Provenance: Ambroise Vollard, Paris (acquired from Mary Cassatt as part of her studio collection)

Henri M. Petiet, Paris (acquired from the estate of Ambroise Vollard)

Heirs of Henri M. Petiet, Paris

The description of the states needs to be substantially revised. The fact that the illustration of the final state in the Breeskin catalogue raisonné is mislabeled in the text as the fifth state adds to the confusion.

This is one of the set of twelve drypoints that was included in the retrospective exhibition of Cassatt’s paintings, pastels, and more than sixty prints held at Galeries Durand-Ruel, Paris, in 1893. (The final state was published in an edition of up to 25 impressions.)
