In the fourth state, the composition is essentially complete, but Cassatt changed the overall effect considerably in the fifth state by adding shading and contour lines. Three other impressions of this state are known, one of which, also from Vollard's collection, was included in our exhibition and catalogue, "Mary Cassatt Prints and Drawings from the Artist's Studio", November 10 - December 29, 2000.
This is one of the set of twelve drypoints that was included in the retrospective exhibition of Cassatt’s paintings, pastels, and more than sixty prints held at Galeries Durand-Ruel, Paris, in 1893. (The final state was published in an edition of up to 25 impressions.)
