Born in Brooklyn, Ruyl was known for his architectural etchings and illustrated books, Louis Ruyl specialized in both architectural and landscape views. He was a full member of both the Stowaway Club and of the Artists Guild of the Authors' League of America. Some of his more famous illustrated books include, Cape Cod Old and New, Old Post Road, from Boston to Plymouth and From Provincetown to Portsmouth.
