About

A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Volz had his artistic training at the Art und Gewerbescule in Zürich and the Academy of Fine arts in Vienna. This powerful, modernist image, was undoubtedly influenced by the artist's exposure to the great Swiss and French avant-garde poster designers of the 1920's and 30's. After Immigrating to the U.S. in 1933, he settled in the San Francisco Bay Area and became a citizen in 1938. During the Depression, Volz was appointed to the position of supervisor in the Northern California WPA Art Project. Reproduced and exhibited: L’Amérique de la Dépression: Artistes Engagés des Années 30, Musée-Gallerie de la Seita, Paris, 1996.
