This is the largest of the three prints that Kollwitz made on this moving interpretation of a religious theme. Elizabeth is on the left and Mary is on the right. Carl Zigrosser writes, "The story of the Visitation gave scope on the human side to the expression of tender camaraderie in the meeting of the two expectant mothers. It is one of the sweetest and lovliest of her prints without a hint of tragic implication." (Prints and Drawings of Kathe Kollwitz. New York: Dover, 1951) p. xvii. Illustrated: Minna C. and H. Arthur Klein, Kathe Kollwitz: Life in Art (New York: Schocken Books, 1975).
