Frederick Hammersley was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended the University of Idaho in Southern Branch, Pocatello from 1936 to 1938, Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles, California from 1940 to 1942 and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France in 1945. From 1946, he once again studied at Chouinard Art School and from 1947 to 1950 he studied at Jepson Art School, also in Los Angeles.
