Barry Flanagan

Welsh (1941–2010)

Born in North Wales, Barry Flanagan studied at Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts and at St. Martin's School of Art in London. He was awarded a grant from the Gulbenkain Foundation, London to choreograph dance pieces, and he was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Arts, London. He currently lives and works in Dublin. Horses and hares have been consistent themes in Welsh artist Barry Flanagan's art. Flanagan's horses are monumental, showing the horse as a symbol of masculinity and strength. His hares are playful and giddy, actively multiplying, overflowing with living energy. Sculptural renditions of his dancing and prancing hares are beginning to populate the international landscape.
