Johan Dijkstra, Dutch (1896-1978) was a was a founding member of the Groningen art society known as "De Ploeg." He was a painter as well as a printmaker and his woodcuts were highly representative of the expressionist nature of De Ploeg and its artists. The German expressionist printmakers, especially Kirchner, inspired Dijkstra. De Ploeg translates to the plow, which brings to mind images of carving a woodblock for the purpose of printmaking.
