Ivan Albright

American (1897–1983)

Painter, sculptor, engraver and lithographer, Ivan Le Lorraine Albright was born in 1897 just outside of Chicago. Between 1919 and 1924 he studied at École Regionale Beaux- Arts in France, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design in New York. In 1929, he worked at Albright Studios in Warrenville, IL. His compositions are very organized and detailed, and he is known to have been very meticulous about lighting, an obsession that corresponds with his early interest in the paintings of El Greco and Rembrandt. In 1997, to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of his birth, the Art Institute of Chicago held a retrospective of his work.
