Leonora Carrington
British/active Mexico
(born 1917)
Carrington spent the majority of her career in Mexico City and was affiliated with the Surrealist movement there around mid-century. Carrington was involved for a while with German Expressionist Max Ernst before he was taken into custody by the Nazis. After the couple's devastating split, Carrington moved to Mexico. Her paintings and lithographs are fantastical and mysterious compositions that incorporate a very personal visual language.
