Chris Burden

American (born 1946)

American conceptual artist Chris Burden was born in 1946. He received a B.A. from Pomona College in Claremont, California and an M.F.A. from the University of California in Irvine. Burden first gained international recognition in the 1970s as an influential and sometimes controversial figure in the West Coast performance and Conceptual Art movements. He began experimenting with video in 1974, using it as major component in his performances as well as for the documentation of his pieces. The Newport Harbor Art Museum in California organized a retrospective of his work in 1988 and he has performed and exhibited internationally and domestically for several years. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants including, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Burden currently teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles.
