Elfriede Martha Abbe

American (born 1919)

Sculptor, engraver and illustrator, Elfriede Martha Abbe was born in Washington D.C. in 1919. She is best known for her abstract sculptures in wood. Abbe studied at Cornell University and Syracuse University. She won awards while at Cornell in 1938 and 1940. In 1948 she won the Tiffany Foundation Fellowship and in 1970 she won a gold medal from the National Arts Club.

Abbe exhibited widely during the 1960s at the San Diego Fine Arts Gallery, the Carnegie-Mellon University, the National Academy of Design and the National Arts Club, to name a few.
