Andy Warhol

Born in Pittsburgh, painter, print and filmmaker, Andy Warhol studied pictorial design at the Carnegie Institute of Techonology before moving to New York City. Warhol, the dean of the Pop Art movement in the Sixties, is unquestionably one of the world's most famous artists today. He redefined subject matter and the processes of making art. By selecting popular images of objects and personalities and mechanically reproducing them, he created artwork that offended by its banality while it captured visual attention by its familiarity.

Warhol began his career as a commercial artist (1949-1960) and used such techniques and images in his work. His early paintings were stylized comic strips or advertisements and later he produced works of repeated images using rubber and wooden stamps and stencils, which eventually lead him to reproductions made with silkscreen on canvas. His work consists mainly of portraits, documentary images, consumer goods and flowers. From 1963 on, he made, or collaborated in, films produced in his “factory”.
