Toyokuni II (originally Toyoshige) was a student of the great late eighteenth century woodcut artist, Utagawa Toyokuni. Yoyokuni II became the adopted son and pupil of Toyokuni I and upon Toyokuni’s death, Toyoshige inherited his name and became Toyokuni II.
He is best remembered for his prints of actors and bijin, (beautiful women). His full-length portraits are recognized for their exceptional expressiveness. Toyokuni II also created a number of prints depicting stunning landscapes.
