Philip Taaffe

Philip Taaffe was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1955. He studied at Cooper Union in New York and he has most recently lived and worked in New York. In the beginning of his career, he drew inspiration from Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelly and various Op Art artists.
Taaffee incorporates numerous historical and cultural influences in his work, including calligraphy and ornamentation from North Africa, woodblocks from India, swordguards from Japan, Islamic architecture and textile design from Eastern Europe.
