Kiki Smith
Dealers:
Born in Germany, Kiki Smith worked with artist and film-maker Charlie Ahearn, who introduced her to Collaborative Projects, an artist's collective. She also worked in glass at the New York Experimental Glass Workshop. She received the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. She currently lives and works in New York.
Kiki Smith's work is about the body -- specifically about the differences between our own, private perceptions of our bodies and public stereotypes of the body and sexuality. Smith moves beyond feminism to focus on the body affected through processes such as aging or giving birth.
She is a prolific printmaker and photographer as well as an important sculptor. A major retrospective of her prints and multiples at the Museum of Modern Art is currently in preparation.
