Charles Louis Sallee

African-American (1911–2006)

Charles Louis Sallee was born in 1913 in Oberlin, Ohio. He studied at Karamu House, the Institute of Arts and at Western Reserve University, earning a B.S. in 1939. After teaching, for a time, in Cleveland schools, he worked on projects for the Works Progress Administration as a printmaker and mural painter. Sallee worked as a cartographer and camouflage designer during WWII.

For many years, Sallee has had a successful career as an interior designer for corporate offices and hotels, as well as for private homes. Since, retiring, he has devoted his time to painting portraits.
