Daniel Kelly

Daniel Kelly was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1947. He received his BFA and MS degrees in Oregon. He moved to Kyoto in 1977 to pursue studies with master woodblock printer, Tokuriki Tomikichiro.

Kelly works with a variety of media, including lithography, etching, cement relief, block prints and painting. His themes and subjects range from quiet landscapes to nonrepresentational images.

Kelly developed a technique of producing block prints by applying cement to a wooden plank and sculpting it into a raised surface, which holds ink for printing. Each color requires a separate block and printing, much like original woodblock prints. Kelly uses a special oversized press and heavy- duty handmade Nepalese papers to complete the process. He currently lives and works in Kyoto, periodically visiting the United States.
