Augustin Hirschvogel
German
(1503–1553)
Dealers:
Glass painter, etcher, cartographer and mathematician, Augustin Hirschvogel was born in Nuremberg. He trained as a stained-glass painter in his father’s workshop, remaining there until his father’s death.
In 1525, Nuremberg accepted the Reformation, spelling the end of major stained-glass commissions. This change forced Hirschvogel to become more versatile. By 1530 he had established his own workshop and in 1531 he established a partnership with Hanns Nickel and Oswald Reinhart. Hirschvogel produced the first planimetric city map of Vienna.
