Suzuki Harunobu was born circa 1724 in Edo, Japan where he also spent the majority of his life. Judging from his works, it can be assumed that he came from a cultured background. There is also speculation that he came from the samurai class. Harunobu’s works consist of drawings, paintings and at least 700 color prints. He also illustrated nearly twenty-four books.
Harunobu’s early works, before 1765, contained two to three colors and after 1766 he used up to ten different colors. His favorite subjects were beautiful young girls and men. His female images are slender and graceful and he was one of the first artists to introduce nighttime scenes and scenes of snow.
