signed in sumi ink within the composition at lower left, Yoshida, with red artist's 'Edelweiss' flower seal, with artist's jizuri('self printed') seal on upper right margin, followed by date, Taisho 14 (1925), and title Matahorunsan, yoru, titled in English and signed in pencil along the bottom margin, Matterhorn - Night, Hiroshi Yoshida, 1925 obaiban tate-e 21 1/8 by 16 1/8 in., 53.7 by 41.1 cmAccording to Yoshida in his book Japanese Wood-Block Printing, fourteen blocks and twenty-three impressions (pulls from the blocks) were required to produce this print. This nighttime view of the village of Zermatt at the base of the Matterhorn in Switzerland is what Yoshida would call a betsuzuri- a special color variant of the daytime view of Matterhorn which was produced with the same set of blocks.
