Bartsch, XVI, no. 55; TIB, vol. 32, no. 55 (137), page 211
411 x 570 mm
After Giulio Romano (circa 1499-1546) and Giovanni Francesco Penni (1488-1528).
Provenance:
The Dukes of Devonshire, Chatsworth; Christie’s London, Old Master Prints from Chatsworth, 5 December 1985, lot 89, on the original album sheet and with their number in pencil below.
A very fine impression of this rare print, on laid paper bearing an indistinct ‘Circle’ watermark, laid down onto an 18th century album sheet. An un-inked vertical printer’s crease at upper centre, generally in excellent condition.
The monumental composition recalls Raphael’s Stanze in the Vatican. The scene unfolds in the Old St. Peter’s Basilica, as the Constantinian ‘Pergula’ attests
