More Information

Drypoint, soft-ground, and aquatint printed in colors, eleventh (final) state, an exceptionally fine, vivid proof, with much burr, on old laid paper with watermarks Adriaan Rogge, interlaced initials AR, and fleur-de-lis in crowned shield, annotated M in lower-left margin

This is an extraordinarily vivid impression of one of Cassatt’s greatest color prints. Here, she has refined the principal elements of the central panel in the “Modern Woman” mural that she executed for the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition.

This subject was one of more than sixty prints included in the important retrospective exhibition of Cassatt’s paintings, pastels, and prints held at Galeries Durand-Ruel, Paris, in 1893. (Although an edition of 20 was intended, only a small number of impressions have been located.)
