More Information

Aquatint on laid "Aqua-Fortistes" paper, 1833. Reference: Delteil-Strauber 19. An undescribed intermediary state between the 3rd and 4th of 6. Before most letters (the title barely noticeable), but with the artist’s monogram in the upper right image corner. Scarce as such. Before the edition for the Société des Aquafortistes (5th volume, 1867). Prov: Henri M. Petiet, with his monogram stamp on the verso (not in Lugt). Plate: 8 ⅞ x 6 ⅜ inches. Image: 6 ¼ x 3 ¾ inches. The watermark indicates that this proof was pulled before all letters were added. It is likely that a few such “deluxe” impressions were printed without, or before letters. They were made to look like artist’s proofs, such as is the case for the impression in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris.
