More Information

Bellows places a bottle with the word "proof" in the lower center of the image. The pun is on alcohol as well as a lithographic proof. Bellows wrote, "The result of a young artist's first service on an official jury. For fear of offense none of the 'likenesses' will be painted out. They are whoever they are." The catalogue of Bellows' lithographs states, "The setting is probably the National Arts Club. Bellows pictured himself as the observer in the upper right, in this satirical comment on the contemporary art world. His friend, Robert Henri, is possibly the figure seated in the shadow, right foreground.
