Jules Engel

Hungarian-American , 1918 - 2003

Born in 1918 in Budapest, Hungary Jules Engel was the founding director of the Experimental Abstract Animation Department at CalArts. For thirty years, he challenged and influenced students from all parts of the world.

Since 1999, Engel has worked with Master Printer George Page of Versailles Press to create a series of color lithographs that highlight Engel’s mastery of color and form. He explored the art of stone, earlier in his career at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop and Gemini. Engel’s works on paper reveal his experimentation with color, line and geometric shape and his trademark sense of movement.

Engel is probably best known for his work in animation. Disney’s “Fantasia” is among his many animation credits. After his death in 2003, the Animation World Network put together a ten-page tribute to his life’s work.
