William Dole was born in Angola, Indiana in 1917. He immersed himself in art at a young age, inspired by a visit to the Chicago Art Institute. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, then served in the Army during WWII.
Though he has explored printmaking, painting and drawing, it was Dole’s collages that brought him to prominence in the early 1950s. In 1961, he participated in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Annual Exhibition. Dole was an artist- in residence at the Tamarind Institute at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM in 1971.
