Dianna Frid was born in Mexico City and immigrated to Vancouver, Canada as a teenager. She received her M.F.A. from the Fiber and Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. She was a Harper Fellow at the University of Chicago from 2003 to 2006. Presently, she is Assistant Professor in Studio Arts in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Frid makes objects and images by re-imagining literary and scientific representations of natural phenomena. She makes books, objects and installations that join mixed media, sculpture, and works on paper. Frid relies on the reconfiguration of materials to hone techniques and expand on content. Physicality and process are integral to the formal and thematic concerns in her work.
Dianna Frid has been the recipient of various grants and awards including the Canada Council for the Arts, 2009 and an Artadia Award, 2004. She has exhibited her work in the United States and internationally, including Asia and Europe.
