Nikolaus Manuel Deutsch
Little is known about Deutsch's life and training. He is believed to have been self-taught and his printed works show evidence of the influence of Albrecht Durer, whose graphic works he must have seen. His subject matter reflects the issues of the day, showing the effects of the Protestant Reformation in his religious works, as well as the Renaissance interest in classical antiquity and the fear in Northern countries of witches and sorcery. In addition to being a printmaker, he was also a painter, poet and soldier.
