Mark Francis

Irish, resides in the UK , 1962 -

Mark Francis belongs to a generation of British artists who came to prominence in the early 1990s with an art movement that came to be know as “YBA” or “Young British Artists.” A painter and since 2004, an avid printmaker, Mark draws his vast modes of representation from scientific imagery, thanks primarily to the invention of the electron microscope and with it, advances in microscopic technology in general. Magnified images of cellular clusters, nerve endings, synapses, fungi, even enlarged images from an oscilloscope showing the sound wave made by a cricket, all end up as beautiful soft-focus abstractions. His paintings (and his prints) are carefully built up through thin layers of paint and engender a sense of a lack of personal touch, a slick, polished feeling, yet they are all the while engaging, engrossing and captivating.
