Pele deLappe

American , 1916 - 2007

DeLappe began her artistic career as a caricature artist in San Francisco. From early in her life she was an active supporter of liberal causes, contributing political cartoons to left-wing newspapers and getting arrested twice for participating in marches that supported the Communist party (though she parted ways with the political group later in life). In the 1930s she became acquaintanced with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. She eventually wrote an autobiography entitled, "Pele: A Passionate Journey through Art and the Red Press" which discusses, among other things, the role her art played in the politics of San Francisco during her lifetime.
