Samuel de Mesquita
Samuel de Mesquita is best known for being the teacher of renowned printmaker M.C. Escher. Architect turned professor turned printmaker, de Mesquita experimented with a variety of printing methods, though he worked primarily in woodblock prints. After the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands de Mesquita, his wife and son were captured and all executed in concentration camps in the winter of 1944. Some of his works were rescued by Escher and other friends of the family and so remain today for study and admiration.
