Robert Colescott was born in 1925 in Oakland, California. He received his undergraduate degree in art in 1949 from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1952. In 1949, he joined the staff of the University of Wisconsin and initiated a teaching studio in color etching and intaglio printmaking. Colescott studied with Ferdinand Leger during a sojourn to Paris from 1949-1950.
He produced a series of lithographs in 1989 titled “Some Thoughts on Interracial Sex”. Colescott's etchings have held an international reputation since the 1960s and have been featured regularly in surveys of American printmaking.
