Hans Burgkmair

German , 1473 - 1531

A German northern Renaissance artist, Burgkmair was born in 1473 in Augsburg. After studying under Shongauer in Colmar, he settled in his native Augsburg by 1498. He contributed to a famous series of woodcuts for the Emperor, “The Triumph of Maximilian”. He was also employed to illustrate the Emperor’s writings moralizing knightly romances. His son, Hans Burgkmair the Younger was a painter and engraver in his own right.
