Bartholomaeus Breenbergh

Dutch , 1598 - 1657

A Dutch draftsman and painter, Breenbergh was born in 1598. He probably first studied in Amsterdam and at the age of twenty he traveled to Rome, where he lived with Flemish landscapist Paul Brill. He also traveled to Italy in the 1620s and was greatly inspired to bring the Italianate tradition of landscape to the Low Countries. Breenbergh turned from landscape to narrative scenes after 1645 and later painted portraits.
