Born in New York in 1934, painter, printmaker, sculptor and professor, Sigmund Abeles studied at the Art Students League of New York under Reginald Marsh, Harry Sternberg and Morris Kantor. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Painting from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University.
Abeles has held teaching positions at Wellesley College, Boston University, the University of New Hampshire and at the National Academy of Design in New York City. In 1990, Abeles was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design in New York. His work is represented in many collections such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Chicago Art Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, NYC, the Philadelphia Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many others.
