Born in West Hartlepool in 1935, Basil Beattie studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He taught at Goldsmith’s College in London until 1998. In 1999 Beattie was given the Nordstern Award from the Royal Academy of Arts, Summer Exhibition. He was Shortlisted for the Charles Woolaston Prize in 2000 and Shortlisted for the Jerwood Painting Prize in 2001. Beattie was elected a Member of the Royal Aacdemy of Arts in 2006. Significant solo exhibitions include IKON Gallery, Birmingham in 1994, Advanced Graphics London in 2001, Sadler’s Wells, London in 2002, Tate Britain, London in 2007 and Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Cumbria in 2010. His paintings and prints are included in major UK collections such as the Government Art Collection, the Saatchi Collection and the Tate. Beattie lives and works in London.
