Born in Massachusetts, Frank Stella attended Princeton University. He served as artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College and at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in Rome. He was awarded the Gold Medal for Grpahic Art by the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Gold Medal from the National Arts Club in New York. He currently lives and works in New York.
He has moved through numerous styles of painting, from his famous black, symmetrical canvases, to colorful symmetrical designs on shaped canvases, to works with intersecting patterned geometric and curvilinear shapes. One of the greatest innovators in contemporary printmaking, Stella's prints are on a par with his paintings in their scale and exuberant colors.
