Saul Steinberg

Rumanian , 1914 - 1999

Born in Romania, Saul Steinberg attended the University of Bucharest and later the Polytechnico, Facolta di Architettura in Milan, where he received his degree in architecture. He served as an Artist-in-Residence at the Smithsonian Institute and was elected a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in New York.

A highly respected artist, he died in 1999 having completed 85 covers and 600 drawings for The New Yorker, many of which reside in the collections of museums worldwide. Steinberg elevated the comic to the status of fine art and made a distinct reputation for himself in both the commercial and art worlds.
