Johann Heinrich Schonfeld
German painter and etcher, Johann Heinrich Schönfeld was born in Biberach an der Riss in 1609. Not much is known about his early career, but he spent about a decade in Italy (mainly Rome and Naples) as a young man.
Schönfeld settled in Augsburg in 1652, after which his development can be traced through dated works. A versatile and prolific artist, he painted historical and genre subjects as well as numerous altarpieces for churches in southern Germany. Drawing on various Italian influences, Schönfeld had a lively and eclectic style, utilizing elements of German Rococo art.
